Newberry Hours:
Saturday, July 2: 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
Sunday, July 3: Noon-10 p.m.
Monday, July 4: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. While Newberry will be open, most administrative and teaching staff will be out of the office today.

Courses:

No courses will be held on Monday, July 4. For those in the Bayes workshop, there will be a review session held in the Newberry Building.

Things to Do in & around Ann Arbor

Silver Lake, Pinckney Recreation Area.

Staying in town for the long holiday weekend? Start off your festivities by celebrating Canada Day! Several friendly Canadians will meet at Newberry at 6:45 p.m on Friday, July 1 and head to a local watering hole.

The weather is supposed to be sunny and lovely all weekend, so we recommend floating the Huron River, which runs through downtown Ann Arbor. The Argo Canoe Livery rents kayaks and inner tubes for those looking to relax on the water. There is also a lake and beach at the nearby Pinckney Recreation Area, which is a half-hour drive from Ann Arbor. If you're reliant on public transportation, be aware that the U-M's blue buses and the city of Ann Arbor's Ride buses will not be offering transit services on July 4.

Eastern Market

Things to Do in Detroit
If you're looking to explore Michigan over the long holiday weekend, you might try Detroit, which is a 45-minute drive to the east of Ann Arbor. We recommend visiting Eastern Market (Sat., 7 a.m.-4 p.m.), a massive outdoor market where you'll find everything from fresh, local fruit and veggies to food to flowers and more. Belle Isle, an island in the Detroit River with impressive views of downtown Detroit and Canada, offers plenty of recreation opportunities, including an aquarium, a conservatory, and a zoo. Other worthwhile places to visit include the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum and the Motown Museum.

Other Nearby Destinations
Other places to visit in Michigan include the lakeside beaches at South Haven and Ludington on the west side of the state (although they are guaranteed to be packed during the holiday weekend). If you're feeling adventurous and have a car, Chicago is 4 hours to the west, Toronto 5 hours to the east, and the spacious wilds of Michigan's Upper Peninsula are to the north.

Just north of downtown, the Huron River is a wonderful way to relax and cool down. The Argo Canoe Livery rents kayaks, canoes, tubes, paddleboards, and more.

Great lunch spots

Looking for a quick, casual spot to grab a bite to eat in between classes? May we recommend:

Jerusalem Garden is a Lebanese restaurant that serves delicious and affordable sandwiches and full-plate meals. Excellent falafel, hummus, and chicken shawarma.

Le Dog is a hot dog stand that also serves gourmet soups like lobster bisque, Vichyssoise, chicken tortilla, and clam chowder. No seating.

Kosmo is a Korean diner in the Kerrytown Shops that serves large bowls of bibimbop and Korean-American fusion foods like the Bogie (bulgogi hoagie) or the Seoul dog (a hot dog wrapped in bacon and topped with kimchi).

Totoro serves fresh sushi, tempura, and teriyaki dishes.

Ginger Deli serves fresh, yummy bahn mi sandwiches and bowls of pho out of a takeout window at the corner of Liberty and Division.

Coffee shops in downtown Ann Arbor

Downtown Ann Arbor boasts numerous cafes. Here are a few local spots we recommend:

Located in the airy, glass-covered Nickels Arcade directly across the street from U-M, Comet Coffee serves exquisite espresso drinks and coffees brewed-to-order. Seating is limited in this pocket-sized shop!

Roos Roast is a popular and friendly local roaster whose signature blend, Lobster Butter Love, has a creamy, mild flavor that Ann Arborites adore.

Another beloved local roaster, Mighty Good Coffee has two locations that bookend the campus/downtown area. Both shops feature lots of tables, power outlets, and windows, making them great places to study and work.

lab concocts uniquely flavored espresso drinks whose frothy surfaces are artfully decorated.

Espresso Royale's three locations near campus offer lots of space to study. They sell a giant-sized iced coffee at a reasonable price.

And, if you're ever in need of a quick and free caffeine boost, stop by Newberry, where we have a coffee and tea bar in the back lounge.

New! Evening Workshop

From August 15-19, the Summer Program is offering the short workshop "Introduction to R: How to Use R for Data Management, Data Analysis, and Graphical Display" from 5-8 p.m. on the University of Michigan campus. This course is ideal for researchers, analysts, graduate students, staff, and faculty who are seeking a brief and applied introduction to using R for quantitative data analysis in their own research or instruction. ICPSR member registration fee: $600.

Don't forget to bring:

A sweater, sweatshirt, or light jacket. In past years, the thermostat in some of our classrooms has been set to "polar." The university controls the temperature, which means we may not be able to turn off the A/C in a timely manner. Also, summer nights in Ann Arbor are lovely but occasionally chilly, with temperatures dipping into the 50s or 60s degrees Fahrenheit (10-15 degrees Celsius).

Your passport. A short tunnel separates Canada from Detroit, which is only a 45 minute drive from Ann Arbor. Many of our participants use the weekends to take short trips to nearby destinations, including our neighbor to the north.

Sunglasses. When you're not in the classroom, prepare to be outside basking in the sunshine! Downtown Ann Arbor is filled with restaurants, cafes, bars, and beer gardens that provide outdoor seating, perfect for studying, relaxing, or hanging out with friends.

T-shirt ideas: Every year, participants in our four-week sessions are invited to submit their designs for the annual Summer Program t-shirt contest. The design that receives the most votes will be made into a t-shirt worn by your fellow participants and instructors for years and years to come.

Newberry Building Hours

The headquarters for our four-week sessions, the Newberry Building contains the offices of staff, instructors, and TAs, as well as computer labs, a library, and lounges for socializing or studying. Its regular hours are:

Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, Noon – 10:00 p.m.
